Sandy pounds Bahamas after killing 21 in Caribbean

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) ? Hurricane Sandy raged through the Bahamas early Friday after leaving 21 people dead across the Caribbean, following a path that could see it blend with a winter storm and reach the U.S. East Coast as a super-storm next week.

Sandy knocked out power, flooded roads and cut off islands in the storm-hardened Bahamas as it swirled past Cat Island and Eleuthera, but authorities reported no deaths in the scattered archipelago.

"Generally people are realizing it is serious," said Caroline Turnquest, head of the Red Cross in the Bahamas, who said 20 shelters were opened on the main island of New Providence.

Sandy, which weakened to a category 1 hurricane Thursday night, caused havoc in Cuba early in the day, killing 11 people in eastern Santiago and Guantanamo provinces as its howling winds and rain toppled houses and ripped off roofs. Authorities said it was Cuba's deadliest storm since July 2005, when category 5 Hurricane Dennis killed 16 people and caused $2.4 billion in damage.

Sandy also killed one person while crossing Jamaica on Wednesday and 10 in Haiti, where heavy rains from the storm's outer bands caused flooding in the impoverished and deforested country.

Early Friday, the hurricane's center was about 145 miles (235 kilometers) east-southeast of Freeport, Bahamas. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph) and was moving north-northwest at 13 mph (20 kph).

Forecasters warned that Sandy will likely mix with a winter storm to create a monster storm in the eastern U.S. next week whose effects will be felt along the entire Atlantic Coast from Florida to Maine and inland to Ohio.

Sandy, which crossed Cuba and reached the Bahamas as a category 2 hurricane, was expected to maintain its category 1 storm status for the next few days.

In the Bahamas, power was out on Acklins Island and most roads there were flooded, government administrator Berkeley Williams said.

On Ragged Island in the southern Bahamas, the lone school was flooded.

"We have holes in roofs, lost shingles and power lines are down," said Charlene Bain, local Red Cross president. "But nobody lost a life, that's the important thing."

Steven Russell, an emergency management official in Nassau, said docks on the western side of Great Inagua island had been destroyed and the roof of a government building was partially ripped off.

Sooner Halvorson, a 36-year-old hotel owner from Colorado who recently moved to the Bahamas, said she and her husband, Matt, expected to ride out the storm with their two young children, three cats, two dogs and a goat at their Cat Island resort.

"We brought all of our animals inside," she said, though she added that a horse stayed outside. "She's a 40-year-old horse from the island. She's been through tons of hurricanes."

On Great Exuma island, guest house operator Veronica Marshall supplied her only customer with a flashlight and some food before Sandy bore down. She said she was confident that she and her business would make it through intact.

"I'm 73 years old and I've weathered many storms," she said.

Tropical storm conditions were possible for Florida's southeastern coast, the Upper Keys and Florida Bay by Friday morning.

Hurricane Sandy was expected to churn through the central and northwest Bahamas by Friday afternoon and then head northward off the U.S. coast.

With storm conditions projected to hit New Jersey with tropical storm-force winds Tuesday, there was a 90 percent chance that most of the U.S. East Coast would get steady gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Wednesday, U.S. forecaster Jim Cisco said.

In an announcement at the end of Cuba's Thursday night newscast, Cuban authorities said the island's 11 dead included a 4-month-old boy who was crushed when his home collapsed and an 84-year-old man in Santiago province.

Santiago, Cuba's second largest city near the eastern tip of the island, was spared the worst of the storm, which also slammed the provinces of Granma, Holguin and Las Tunas.

There were no reports of injuries at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, but there were downed trees and power lines, said Kelly Wirfel, a base spokeswoman. Officials canceled a military tribunal session scheduled for Thursday for the prisoner charged in the 2000 attack on the Navy destroyer USS Cole.

In Haiti, Joseph Edgard Celestin, a spokesman for the civil protection office, said the country's death toll stood at nine, including three people who died while trying to cross storm-swollen rivers in southwestern Haiti. He did not provide specifics of how other people died.

Officials reported flooding across Haiti, where many of the 370,000 people still displaced by the devastating 2010 earthquake scrambled for shelter. More than 1,000 people were evacuated from 11 quake settlements, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Sandy was blamed for the death of an elderly man in Jamaica.

Report of China leader's family wealth may hurt image

China Daily via Reuters, file

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao shakes hands with local workers in earthquake-hit Mianzhu, Sichuan province in this Jan. 25, 2009 file photo.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

BEIJING ? When news broke earlier this year that the family of disgraced Chongqing party boss, Bo Xilai, had amassed $160 million in ill-gotten earnings, the story was seen as a proverbial pin in the balloon China?s ruling Communist Party has long floated to its people about its leadership.

In China the storyline went something like this: local-level officials could be and have been corrupted. But China?s highest leaders were incorruptible, pious men who were sympathetic to the plight of the country?s citizenry.

Bo?s corruption and the transgressions of his inner circle have been very publicly renounced by the Communist Party. His wife, Gu Kailai, was found guilty of the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood while his former deputy police chief, Wang Lijun, was jailed and held up as a traitor after his now infamous flight to the American Consulate in Chengdu this past winter.

News Friday that Bo had been stripped of his last party title appears to pave the way for a convenient resolution of the scandal before a critical once-in-a-decade leadership changeover on Nov. 8 at the 18th Communist Party Congress.

But the revelation in Friday?s New York Times that the family of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao controlled assets of at least $2.7 billion dollars posed a grave threat to the Party?s preferred narrative of being the honest broker that brings prosperity to all.

NYT report: China leader Wen Jiabao's family has amassed billions in assets since '98

So much so that Beijing was forced Friday to kick the censorship gears up a notch, blocking the English- and Chinese-language websites of the New York Times, blacking out mentions of the story on independent cable news channels carried in China, and censoring the names of Wen?s family and other mentions of the story on China?s Internet. ????

At a Foreign Ministry briefing Friday, a spokesman gruffly stated that the Times? report "blackens China's name and has ulterior motives." When asked why the paper?s website was being censored, he said, "China manages the Internet in accordance with laws and rules."

One piece of information not censored, however is a report released Thursday by the research group, Global Financial Integrity, which estimated $3.7 trillion dollars had been pilfered and smuggled out of China from 2000 through 2011.

The report also estimated that $472 billion -- or 8.3 percent of China?s 2011 gross domestic product -- had been stolen last year alone.

Just how guilty Wen is in his family?s nationwide money grab is up for debate. As the Times? report noted, a 2007 diplomatic cable published by Wikileaks quoted an executive who noted that the premier was aware of his family?s lucrative business ventures: ?Wen is disgusted with his family's activities, but is either unable or unwilling to curtail them."

Wen?s failure to reign in his family?s financial activities threatens to undermine the carefully scripted public persona he has cultivated over the years.

AFP - Getty Images

A click-through history of modern relations between the United States and China.

Nicknamed ?Grandpa Wen? by state media, the premier has relished opportunities to be photographed connecting with members of rural communities and blue-collar workers. During the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, he was a near-daily presence in news reports about the disaster and government rescue and recovery efforts.

He has also been dogged in his calls for economic reform and greater income equality. At this year?s National People?s Congress, during what was likely his last major press conference in a 45-year-long political career, Wen called for reform.

?Even with a single breath left, I am ready to dedicate myself fully to the cause of China?s reform,? he was quoted as saying.

Although Wen was speaking months before the release of the Times piece, he still apparently felt the need to address whispers about relatives trading on the family name. ?I have never pursued personal gain,? declared Wen, before adding, ?History will have the final say.?

Communist Party officials hope to control the writing of history. But the institution is starting to feel the strain of having to push an ever heavier stone uphill. The Internet has made information more widely available than ever before on the mainland; what censors just 10 years ago could make disappear ? sometimes literally -- has become more problematic today.

Still, while completely squashing a story in China seems to no longer be possible, it may not be Beijing?s intention or even in its best interest to stifle information. Some Chinese have found ways to circumvent the Great Firewall, while millions have gone abroad, where they have been exposed to the world beyond. Allowing them the safety valve of relatively free information does not pose an immediate threat to Party rule for now.

That?s because the vast majority of China?s population appears to be apolitical, disinterested in or unwilling to engage in any meaningful political discourse. This situation is changing, quickly at times.

For now, however, the censorship of unpalatable stories is an effective albeit cumbersome tool for the Party to wield.

As for the New York Times, its fate in China looks dim. Just two months ago, Bloomberg ran a similar story that showed how the family of China?s likely future president, Xi Jinping, had also accumulated a vast business fortune ? though unlike Wen?s kin, Xi?s immediate family did not appear to be reaping the same economic benefits.

Bloomberg?s website has since been blocked on the mainland.?

Best Improve Your Home With These Sound Ideas

Some homeowners never get around to improving their home. They are often scared off by the cost or the disruption to their lives that they believe are necessary. There are many home improvement projects that are easy for even a novice to do. This article will give you some terrific information to help take away some of the fear of beginning your home improvement endeavors.

You can inexpensively update your home with nothing more than paint. Paint can give your home a new look without a high cost. Painting a room can totally change the atmosphere of it, even more so if the new color is completely different from the old. Additionally, you can correct any painting mistakes by choosing a new color.

If you?d like to freshen up your bathroom?s appearance, give them a fresh new glaze. An old, worn bathroom can look new and shiny with a coat of fresh glaze. If you put in a new floor in your bathroom it may cost you more than you think, new glaze is very cheap. The value of a home can be increased at a bargain price through glazing.

When planning a major home renovation project, hire a professional architect or designer to create your plans. If you do it yourself, you may not have the right plans, technically, and fail. Professional designers will be able to create meaningful plans to construct from, ones that also meet all local building restrictions.

Prior to beginning a major improvement, you should meet with your neighbors and tell them your project schedule. Being the neighbor during construction can be a certain nuisance. You will enhance neighborly goodwill by letting your neighbors know what will be going on so they are not unpleasantly surprised or inconvenienced.

Add some fresh flowers or a fruit bowl to your kitchen. Your kitchen will come to life with a beautiful flower arrangement or a generous bowl of fresh fruit. This is an inexpensive fix and will brighten up the kitchen instantly. Seeing a vase full of new flowers can make even dull days seem better in your kitchen while improving your mood.

Creating a cost estimate is critical for every type of home improvement project, other than the very tiniest ones. You can save money if you purchase material in bulk. Make sure that items you will need are in stock or order them well in advance of the time you will need them. If they are not ordered in advance they can hold up the entire project.

If you have building materials to store, put them between your floor joints or ceiling rafters. Long or large pieces of material or molding like two-by-fours can placed somewhere inconspicuous with little effort. Nail some furring strips to two exposed rafters or floor joists, and place the material in there.

Look into wood cabinets if you are considering replacing your cabinetry. Wood cabinets will last for years, withstanding much wear and tear. Some of the most popular woods for cabinets are oak, cherry and maple. They can all be stained if you want a different color.

Invest some time in getting ready to undertake your home improvement project! For instance, if you are going to be painting the interior of a room you must gather material to cover your possessions or clear the room completely before painting. Splattering paint all over the furniture is one quick way to ruin it completely. Use household sheets to protect your furniture from unexpected splatters and drips.

Finishing your home?s basement is, possibly, the best improvement to make. You are essentially creating another room to live in. The essential materials can be bought from discount stores. This home improvement can add a great deal of re-sale value to your home.

Discovering the origins of a lost water pressure problem may not be too difficult. Ask your neighbors about any problems they have had with water pressure. If they don?t, there is something wrong with your plumbing system. Make sure you check all of your water sources to see if the whole home is having the issue. You may find the problem simply attributed to an aerator in need of adjustment, or else wise, a call to a professional may be in order.

This article illustrated some effective home improvement practices. Knowledge is power when it comes to home improvement projects.

Parents arrested in death of 6-week-old baby - abc27 WHTM

COLUMBIA, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Columbia couple have been charged with criminal homicide and related crimes in the death of their infant son.

The Lancaster County District Attorney's Office announced the charges Wednesday against 24-year-old Andrew R. Moyer Sr. and 23-year-old Brianna E. Michael.

In addition to criminal homicide, each were charged with criminal conspiracy to commit homicide, endangering the welfare of a child, and criminal conspiracy to endanger the welfare of a child.

The infant, six-week-old Andrew R. Moyer Jr., died Thursday at the couple's home in the 100 block of Locust Street. An autopsy Friday determined the baby's death was a homicide.

District Attorney Craig Stedman told abc27 the couple tortured the baby, refused to get him medical treatment, and struck him on the head until he died.

Stedman said an autopsy report showed that the baby had been abused for a week or two before dying of the head injuries.? Stedman said the autopsy also showed the baby suffered multiple traumatic injuries in addition to those to his head, including nine broken ribs, facial injuries, burn marks, and massive injuries to his genitals.

"It is hard to accept the reality of how tragic and terrible this case is," Stedman?told abc27.? "The number one role of a parent is to protect your children, and what took place here is almost unthinkable."

Stedman said there is no chance the injuries were accidental. He said he has not ruled out seeking the death penalty in the case.

Moyer and Michael are being held in the Lancaster County Prison without bail.

LIVE: Marissa Mayer Posts Big Profit Growth ... - Business Insider

Yahoo released its Q3 financials this afternoon.

We took live notes from the conference call below.

The higlights:

  • Yahoo is going to make small aquistions in the tens of millions to low hundreds of millions of dollars.
  • Mayer wants half of Yahoo's engineers to be mobile engineers.
  • Mayer said Yahoo should own some of the content it features.
  • Mayer said it will take multiple years to get the company growing to her standards.

Here are the numbers?(expectations according to Citi):?

  • Net Revenue: ?$1.09 billion vs $1.08 billion expectations.

  • Operating income: $152 million vs. $180 million expectations.

  • EPS: $.35 vs $0.26 expectations.

More from the release:

  • Display revenue ex-TAC was $452 million, flat compared to the third quarter of 2011.
  • GAAP display revenue was $506 million, a 1 percent increase compared to $502 million for the third quarter of 2011.
  • Search revenue ex-TAC was $414 million, an 11 percent increase compared to $374 million for the third quarter of 2011.
  • GAAP search revenue was $473 million, a 1 percent increase compared to $467 million for the third quarter of 2011.

Mayer's canned quote from the earnings release:?"Yahoo! had a solid third quarter, and we are encouraged by the stabilization in search and display revenue. We're taking important steps to position Yahoo! for long-term success, and we're confident that our focus on quality and improving the user experience will drive increased value for our advertisers, partners and shareholders."

You can see a PDF of the results in slides here.

LIVE ANALYSIS: The numbers are mostly in-line, though we're trying to figure out why the EPS is so high. It's not Yahoo's sale of Alibaba stock, which is excluded from the EPS above, and pushes GAAP EPS to $2.64. ?Ex-TAC search revenues are healthy, but not driving the profits on their own. It might be that Yahoo has 1,700 fewer employees today than it did a year ago. Yahoo also sold some intellectual property to Alibaba for $550 million, and it's hard to figure out if that was excluded from the EPS. A source tells us it's due to a tax maneuver put on by now-departed CFO Morse.

The stock is up 2%.

At 5 PM Eastern Time, Yahoo will hold a conference call to go over the numbers. We'll be taking live notes below.

It will be new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's first earnings call at the company.

It's been a very busy quarter for Mayer:

We're told by a source to expect an informative outlining of her vision for the company.?Fingers-crossed!

LIVE NOTES:

Click here for updates to this post.

4:59 ? We're on the call. Mayer has not changed the music. It's still awful!

5:01 ? Here we go! Legal disclaimer time.

5:02 ? Here's Marissa.

5:03 ? Says her first 100 days have been energizing and a lot of fun. Says she discovered Yahoo in 1994 as "Jerry and Dave's Guide To The Worldwide Web." She says the job is tailor made to her. Says Yahoo's core components: Search, ads, mobile, news, homepage are what she did at Google.

5:04 ? Mayer says she's working to improve Yahoo's "people" ? the efficiency, well-being, and accountability of them. Removed bureaucracy and laid out quarterly goals. As of today 93% of employees have quarterly goals. A company goal is to get that to 100%.

5:05 ? Have made smart and thoughtful investments in new mobile phones. Offered free food, a standard thing in the Valley says Mayer.?

5:05 ? We have built a stellar leadership team, says Mayer. Finance, HR, development, and legal. Talks about new CFO Ken Goldman, who will lead our financial fitness moving forward.

5:06 ? She talks about new COO Henrique De Castro, his "rigorous analytical approach."?

5:06 ? She calls out Ron Bell, the new general counsel. Jackie Reses is the new people development person for HR. Kathy Savitt is the new CMO.

5:07 ? Mayer: "In Yahoo Fantasy Sports I would draft these people as my dream team."

5:07 ? Mayer talks about products. Says she's reviewed hundreds of them. Mayer says Yahoo's share is "challenged." She wants to "grow share from the market." She says the alliance "has fallen below our expectations," and that Yahoo got a guarantee payment from Microsoft. That's probably why search revenues spiked this quarter. That'll disappear in six months.

5:08 ? Mayer says mobile is "growing nicely." There's a new version of Flickr for Android. There's a new search for mobile. She talks about IntoNow.

5:09 ? In Q3, Yahoo's global coverage around the 2012 games resulted in more traffic than the Vancouver and Beijing Olympics combined.

5:09 ? She says Yahoo is reinvesting in ad technology. She says advertisers love audience-based buying, and they would buy more if they could. She says Yahoo needs to generate more impressions, which is more usage.

5:10 ? Mayer says that Yahoo has committed to returning $3 billion from the Alibaba deal. She says the smart move is to repurchase stock in the current environment, but says she will reevaluate.

5:11 ? Ken Goldman, the new CFO, now has taken the phone.

5:12 ? He's going over the earnings slides and release. You're better off reading them than having me transcribe.

5:14 ? He says the prime objective is to leverage assets to go from stability to growth.?

5:15 ? He says ad spending on Yahoo Mail came down because Yahoo Mail usage declined, though sale-through remained high. He said the Olympics performed well, but were probably cannabilistic.

5:15 ? He says Yahoo search is up 11% y/y during the quarter, due to better performance and a payment.

5:18 ? We're onto the balance statement and cash flow.

5:20 ? He says the plan is to re-purchase stock with the money from Alibaba. The net gain is $2.8 billion. Yahoo now owns 24% of Alibaba Group. Pre-tax value is $8.1 billion. Not including 800 million of preferred. Cost basis is $250 million.

5:22 ? Goldman is not going to give guidance.

5:22 ? Now it's time for Marissa again. She says the results are a solid foundation. She says Yahoo will become a growth company by inspring and delighting users. Yahoo goal: "to make the world's daily habits inspiring and entertaining." Search is a top priority for Yahoo ? making organic investments to grow our market share. There is clear upside. Says communication products can improve.??Says homepage can too.

5:25 ? Mobile is a daily habit and "fundamental platform shift," that Yahoo has to ride. We've underinvested on mobile, and have splintered our brands. 76 apps. THis needs to change. OUr top priority is a focused strategy. Hiring people to solve this. She says on mobile people watch videos, share photos, play games, check stock quotes, check email ? "Does that sound like any particular company?" Talks about having apps that are "beautiful and compelling."

5:26 ? She's talking about personalization of content and advertising now. Going to contine to create engaging branding experiences. Will expand "simple and effective targeted ads"

5:27 ? The future of Yahoo is bright. Reach. Transformative products that will be indispensible. Inspire. Learn. Innovate. Entertain. She came to Yahoo to bring change. She's not alone she says. Others there share goal. Calls Yahoo a consumer Internet company. "We intend to win."

5:29 ? Time for analyst questions. The first guy wants to know how this all differs from past.

5:30 ? Mayer says the difference is that the core of Yahoo is valuable and it doesn't need to pivot to go into a new business. It needs to focus on daily habits, search, mail, homepage and mobile. It means focusing on where it's already ahead. She's saying Yahoo needs to make products people use every day. Easier said than done!

5:30 ? On search versus display: Mayer says there is more upside in search. There is an opportunity to improve monetization. The content investment Yahoo has made provides a lot of opportunity in display. "I'm bullish on search and display, but because of audience targeting I'm particularly bullish on display."

5:33 ? Now there's a question about international. Mayer says the plan is to build growth. She says South Korea didn't have a growth story ahead of it, so that's why they closed the shop.

5:34 ? Analyst wants to know why Yahoo isn't focusing on local. Mayer says it's very hard to do it well. That it requires a lot of people and a lot of time. Our local offerings are good at the moment. It's hard to take that next step to provide even deeper funcationality. Not an area where we planned to invest moving forward.

5:35 ? Analyst asks a question: You didn't talk about time spent on Yahoo. Is there another metric we should use?

5:36 ? Mayer says the metrics to look at are number of users and pageviews.

5:37 ???Analyst asks where else could Yahoo capital go.

5:37 ? Goldman says it's important to have a strong balance sheet. Says Yahoo will invest in data centers. Will look at "small-ish" acquisitions that further growth.

5:38 ? Mayer talks about investment. She says investing in user-experience involves spending on data centers. In terms of possible aquisitions: Don't have any in mind today. Need flexibility. What's lost on people is that because high profile tech acquisitions are above $1 billion, people don't realize that there are many below $100 million. She says that at Google she did 20 or so of that size. Says Yahoo will look at that size: double digit millions and low hundreds of millions.

5:40 ? Analyst wants to know if Yahoo has strategic options for other search options.

5:41 ? Mayer answers: from my perspective, we have been happy working with Microsoft. The teams work well together. Our goal is to produce a terrific search experience and to work well with our partner in the form of Microsoft to do so.?

5:42 ? Goldman says Yahoo would like to work better with Microsoft and achieve its own results.

5:42 ? Analyst wants to know how Yahoo is going to hire more talented people.

5:43 ? Mayer says Yahoo needs more mobile engineers. Says half of its workforce should work in mobile. People at Yahoo need to learn how to do it. She says she's impressed with the change in Yahoo's applicant pool. At an all hands, employees said that their friends want to work at Yahoo. She's hearing from entrepreneurs are investors are excited to sell to Yahoo. She says Yahoo can be a good home for people in smaller scale aquisitions. Being the place to work attracts talent.

5:45 ? Ken Goldman says "there's a lot of great buzz among the young folks about Yahoo."

5:45 ? Analyst wants to know if Yahoo can win without a mobile operating system. Won't the OS owners just co-opt any valuable application?

5:46 ? Mayer says one of the advantages at Yahoo is not having a mobile operating system because that ?means it can offer its products on iOS and Android. She says checking news, weather, sharing photos, are things people do on the phones and that Yahoo has a unique set of content that it can provide its users.

5:47 ? Analyst also asked about Yahoo ad technology. Mayer says in search, Yahoo is working with Microsoft. She says in display, Yahoo will target its audiences. She touts Yahoo's user-engagement.

5:48 ? Analyst wants to know about how Yahoo is doing on search. He asks about some specific metrics.

5:49 ? Mayer says there is an opportunity to do more integration across Yahoo sites. She says in terms of mobile share, she says there are going to be a few large players in mobile and that Yahoo is going to be one of them. She says if Yahoo has mobile apps that people use on a daily basis, that will also drive search. In terms of monetization, there are going to be elements that are challenging: auction and network dymanics, in particular.

5:50 ? Analyst wants to know if Mayer thinks the site is over-monetized, if there is a clean-up effort needed.

5:51 ? Mayer says I don't think we are over-monetizing. She says revenue is traffic X RPM. She says there are ways where Yahoo could back off on some ad units. The reason to do it is if it causes traffic to grow. If we make changes, it will be for those kinds of trade-offs.

5:53 ? Analyst asks if Mayer thinks Yahoo needs to own its content, or just leverage partnerships.

5:53 ? Mayer says I do think there are some elements of content that we do need to own. Need to do partnership. Need to do partnership. She says Yahoo Answers should be better. She said when we look at Olympics, or Elections, by putting our editors and reporters there were are able to drive pageviews and egagement. Witout ownership of that content, we would not be able to drive that engagement. I do think that is something that is ulimtately important.

5:56 ? Analyst wants to know how important Yahoo TV, OMG, etc are.

5:56 ? Mayer says I am product focused. I do think there are hallmarks of terrific products. They make it fast and straightforward and simple. Another important thing is differentiation. She says OMG, Yahoo TV, are differentiation. Olympics, election, and live events are very important.?

5:56 ? Analyst asked if Yahoo needs better self-service buying for ad-buyers.

5:57 ? Mayer says Yahoo needs to invest more in programmatic buying for advertisers.

5:58 ? Analyst wants to know how long it will take Mayer to get Yahoo growing properly again.

5:59 ? Mayer says my goal isn't to grow at the industry rate, it's to grow faster and more. Industry rate is the first. It will take multiple years to get it where she wants it to be. There will be measurable progress in the meantime.?

6:00 ? Analyst wanted to know how Yahoo will buyback its stock.

6:00 ? Goldman says its extremely attractive, good for shareholders, good for limiting dilution. He says the plan is open market buying.

6:01 ? Analyst wants to know if Yahoo will streamline at this point.

6:01 ? Mayer says Yahoo is completing its restructuring. She says she has revisted this. She says by and large, wer aren't looking at large scale restructuring. She says the focus is bringing it into alignment with the current strategy. Finance, Sports, News, Flickr, many of those ? and getting focused on the shift on mobile. We will be doing some realignment in areas where we need to increase our investment. At this point, it's getting aligned with the strategy.

6:02 Analyst wants to know how Yahoo is using data.

6:03 Mayer says Yahoo does not have a coherent view of its users across all its products. She says that's something that needs to get in place in the future. There's potential there.?

6:05 That's it.

11 celebs you didn't know served in the military

career

11 celebrities who served in the military

You've seen them on TV and at the movies, playing roles where they make you laugh, fight bad guys and sometimes even show off their bare behinds. But did you know they were veterans?

These are 11 celebrities you might not have known served in the military.

Ice T

Ice-T

While most know him now as Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola on "Law and Order: SVU," it wasn't the only time Ice-T was fighting bad guys.

Before his rap days, Tracy Marrow (Ice-T is his stage name) joined the Army's 25th Infantry Division. He served for four years before returning home, where he eventually started a successful music and acting career.

Harvey Keitel

Harvey Keitel

He's played plenty of bad guys on the big screen, but who knew the devil/dad from "Little Nicky" was a good U.S. Marine? Harvey Keitel joined the Marine Corps back when he was just 17, and he served in Lebanon during Operation Blue Bat in 1958.

Mel Brooks

Mel Brooks

"It's good to be the king," and for Americans during World War II, it was good we had this "king" on our side. Mel Brooks served as a corporal in the Army during World War II, where he was assigned to the Battle of the Bulge. Following the war, he went on to earn an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony ? becoming an "EGOT-er" ? and write and direct "The Producers," about producers trying to make the musical flop "Springtime for Hitler."

Gene Hackman

Gene Hackman

Before he was "Behind Enemy Lines," on the big screen, Gene Hackman spent time in the Marines as a field radio operator and as a DJ for the Armed Forces Network. He went from the service to showbiz, earning Oscars for "The French Connection" and "Unforgiven."

Chuck Norris

Chuck Norris

Fact: Chuck Norris was in the United States Air Force. Fact: While stationed in Korea, he trained in Tang Soo Do and later created his own form of martial arts called Chun Kuk Do. Fact: When the boogeyman goes to sleep every night, he checks his closet for Chuck Norris. Oh, also, he's an actor who starred in the "Missing in Action" series of movies as well as "Walker, Texas Ranger."

Dennis Franz

Dennis Franz

Dennis Franz wasn't always wearing his NYPD blues. Drafted after college into the Army, he served for 11 months in Vietnam. We are guessing people liked him in uniform because Franz went on to play at least a dozen police officers before getting the role of Detective Andy Sipowicz on "NYPD Blue," earning him four Emmy Awards.

Montel Williams

Montel Williams

The motivational speaker and former talk show host, Montel Williams, enlisted in the Marines after high school, but later found his gift for public speaking while serving as a lieutenant for the Navy. He served for 22 years, leaving with the rank of lieutenant, after which he went on to win a Daytime Emmy Award and two Genesis Awards for "The Montel Williams Show."

J.R. Martinez

J.R. Martinez

J.R. Martinez is probably the one star on the list well-known for his military service. A corporal in the Army, a roadside-bomb blast burned more than 40 percent of his body while he was serving in Iraq. Even with his injuries, he was positive about his recovery and used his optimism to help other victims. He starred as an Army veteran on "All My Children" and later let his feet do the talking when he rumba'ed his way to the win on season 13 of "Dancing with the Stars."

Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby

The famous TV dad played a doctor on "The Cosby Show," but Bill Cosby also worked in medicine before his days of comedy, assigned to work with those injured in the Korean War while in the Navy. He served for four years as a hospital corpsman before going to college at Temple University and eventually pursuing a career in comedy.

Tom Selleck

Tom Selleck

Everyone's favorite mustachio played a private investigator in Hawaii and Vietnam veteran on TV, but in real life Tom Selleck was a soldier in the California Army National Guard. He was called to duty in 1965 during the Watts Riots.

Rob Riggle

Rob Riggle

Rob Riggle's joke as a correspondent on "The Daily Show" that he could "kill any other member of the show" based on his military experience isn't too far from the truth. He was a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps and served in Kosovo and Afghanistan before moving into full-time comedy, where his characters have ranged from a man-child with a pituitary problem in "The Goods" to a man who laughed when a kid used a Taser "in the face" in "The Hangover."

5 things to watch for in presidential debate

Five things to watch for when President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney meet in their second debate:

1. A REBOUND? After taking a drubbing in the first debate, Obama's under big pressure to step up his game Tuesday night. He'll try to show energy and passion. Look for him to challenge Romney's claims more often, too. Obama's comfortable taking audience questions at campaign events and that should work in his favor at this "town hall" style debate.

2. MAN OF THE PEOPLE? The town hall format holds risk and opportunity for Romney. It could be a great chance to address one of the wealthy businessman's trouble spots ? poll respondents rate him as less likable than Obama and less in tune with regular folks. Romney could warm up his image if he connects well with the voters on stage. What he needs to avoid: coming across as awkward or elitist.

3. MORE CIVIL? Expect a less confrontational tone. Although Democrats are urging Obama to go on the offensive, he needs to balance that against the restraints of the town hall atmosphere. The candidates will try to sound civil even while underscoring their differences, to show respect for the folks surrounding them onstage.

4. THE PEOPLE SPEAK: What will the voters ask? Usually not the kinds of questions posed by journalists moderating more traditional debates. "Real people" tend to frame questions in broader terms and are less likely to focus on the latest charges and countercharges. Sometimes they come up with something out of left field; that's the moment to see how candidates think on their feet.

5. MORE THAN WORDS: They won't be moored to a lectern or table, so this is the time to check out each man's body language. Does a candidate seem relaxed and natural or ill at ease? Does he show empathy for the questioner by stepping in close and making eye contact? Is he attentive while the other guy is talking, or does he grimace and move around distractingly or ? even worse ? check his watch?

What Does Giant Panda Taste Like?

Jia Jia the giant panda eating. Do pandas taste like chicken? Probably not.

Chinese scientists have found evidence that prehistoric people ate giant pandas. The Explainer has previously described the flavors of whale, sloth, dinosaur, horse, and even human. How does giant panda meat taste?

Terrible, apparently. In 1983, a Chinese villager named Leng Zhizhong was tried for illegally killing a giant panda. He told the judge that his wife cooked the meat with turnips, but they didn?t enjoy it, so he fed some to his pigs and gave the remainder to his sister. Leng, unfortunately, didn?t explain what made the meat so unpalatable in what appears to be the only written description of panda-eating. Rural Chinese people have no tradition of eating the animal, and some ethnic groups may have considered the practice forbidden. When President Theodore Roosevelt?s sons, Kermit and Theodore IV, killed a giant panda in 1928, their local guides refused to join them in eating the meat and called in a priest to purify the hayloft where the beast had been butchered. (The Roosevelt boys left no description of the taste.) Today, the penalty for killing a panda is several years in prison.

It?s tempting to assume that giant pandas would taste like other members of the taxonomic family Ursidae, such as black and brown bears, which were a regular part of the frontier diet in 18th-century North America. Bear meat is darker and fattier than beef, although similar in flavor. The problem with the comparison, though, is that an animal?s diet greatly affects the flavor of its own flesh. Bears that dine mainly on salmon, for example, taste worse than those with a more varied diet. Since 99 percent of a giant panda?s diet is bamboo?with the occasional addition of a rodent, bird, or fish that popped out of a stream?it?s very unlikely that its flesh tastes anything like that of other bears.

The red panda, the giant panda?s closest living relative, has also largely avoided human gastronomic interest. There are growing reports, however, of Chinese restaurants keeping live, caged red pandas and offering their meat to guests. Descriptions of the experience are rare, suggesting that the animal may also be unpalatable.

Got a question about today?s news? Ask the Explainer.

Debate preparation trumps 2012 campaigning Sunday

(AP) ? President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are skipping campaigning Sunday to focus on preparing for their debate Tuesday night, with the incumbent trying to rebound from a widely panned performance at the first face-off and the Republican nominee hoping to repeat his strong showing.

The president was gathering with advisers at a riverfront resort in Williamsburg while Romney was sticking to his Boston-area home ahead of the prime-time town-hall style debate at Hoftsra University in Hempstead, N.Y., exactly three weeks before the Nov. 6 election.

After a listless first debate Oct. 3, Obama was working with aides on more pointed and aggressive responses to his Republican rival in the tight race. The Obama campaign also wants to go after the former Massachusetts governor and businessman for what it sees as his willingness to shift positions to make them more palatable for voters.

"Gov. Romney has been making pitches all of his life," Obama spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki.

"He knows how to say what people want to hear whether that was during his time at Bain or during the dozens of town halls he did during the primary," she added, referring to the private equity firm that Romney used to run.

Romney will be ready for a more aggressive Obama, adviser Ed Gillespie said.

"The president can change his style, he can change his tactics, he can't change his record and he can't change his policies. And that's what this election is about," Gillespie told CNN's "State of the Union."

Romney's campaign released a new television advertisement using footage from running mate Paul Ryan's debate last week with Vice President Joe Biden. The ad features clips of Ryan saying the government "can't keep spending money we don't have." His comments are juxtaposed with video from the debate of Biden laughing.

The campaign did not say in which states the ad would run.

Obama aides have tried to make debate preparations a higher priority for the president this time. Ahead of first debate, some of Obama's practice sessions were cut short, and others were canceled, mainly because of developments in Libya, where four Americans were killed at a U.S. consulate.

Aides say Obama is still dealing with those matters and others. But the urgency that led to interruptions during earlier debate preparations has subsided, and the campaign is trying to ensure that Obama stays more fully engaged in his practice sessions.

Despite questions about the effectiveness of his debate preparation, Obama is working with the same team this time around. Advisers David Axelrod and David Plouffe, along with former White House officials Anita Dunn and Ron Klain, are running the preparations. Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes has been added to the team because the second and third debates involve foreign policy.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., is playing the role of Romney.

One of the priorities during the practice sessions is sharpening the president's retorts to Romney and drawing a sharper contrast between what the campaign says are Romney's shifting positions on key issues.

The president may have picked up a few pointers from Biden.

Obama watched Thursday's debate with aides in a conference room on Air Force One as he traveled back to Washington. The president said little throughout the debate, but did chime in when Biden would deliver a particularly pointed counter to Ryan.

Romney returned to Massachusetts on Saturday night after campaigning in Ohio. He planned to spend most of his two days at home in Belmont getting ready for the debate.

With Romney is Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who's playing Obama in mock debates.

Creating and Maintaining Healthy Boundaries | Susanna Barlow

Creating and Maintaining Healthy Boundaries

What is a boundary? A boundary is a clear communication that respects yourself and others based on your values, what matters most to you and your personal rules and limitations. A boundary is like an invisible line in the sand between two people, that creates respect. Boundaries are not created for others, in regard to you. In other words, boundaries do not tell others how they can and cannot treat you. They let you know what your limits and rules are, for how you behave toward yourself and others. The boundary is for you: for your protection and self care. A boundary defines where your personal power is, what you have control over and it clarifies what you cannot change or affect. To create and maintain healthy boundaries you will need to first decide why you want boundaries in the first place.

Co-Dependency: Boundaries allow you to have what you want, be who you want, make the choices you want without violating anyone else. It creates respect between two parties and protects you from inadvertently crossing someone else boundaries as well as keeping you from compromising yourself and selling out. Boundaries are vital to any healthy relationship. People who have trouble setting and maintaining boundaries create co-dependent relationships instead. Co-dependent relationships are painful because you often do not get what you need and you may alternate between being controlling and dominating or victimized and needy toward the other person. Another problem with co-dependency is that you feel powerless to change the relationship. Without boundaries you are a victim to others and outer circumstances.

Boundaries and the Victim: When you feel victimized by another person you are definitely dealing with violated boundaries. Feeling victimized by another person only informs you that you have reached some kind of limit or threshold and felt forced to disregard it. Upon examination you will find that the victim can let you know what those limits are and when they were breached. The only way someone can violate your boundaries is if you allow them to. This means there are no blameless victims. This does not mean however that others will always respect your boundaries and others will never violate you. Sometimes when you feel victimized (such as assault, child abuse, rape etc.) you are not necessarily responsible for what happened to you but you are always responsible for how you handle it. Sometimes you can prevent victimization with good boundaries and sometimes you can?t but you can always decide how you will respond. There are exceptions to this of course, such as? people who are mentally handicapped or babies and small children who are not able to respond but most of us do have this ability to respond.

You are always responsible for the loss of boundaries. When you claim this right, no matter how unfair it feels, you will have regained enough personal integrity to restore your boundaries or create a new one. You teach others how to treat you by setting clear, unequivocal boundaries. When you do not communicate your boundaries clearly, others are left to interpret your boundaries. This can lead to misunderstandings, misconceptions and overreactions. If you communicate a boundary and then behave differently than you have communicated, the other person will feel that your boundary has no value and it also devalues your verbal communications. When you find yourself feeling like a victim it can be a wonderful learning experience. To read more about victim behavior read my article about the Victim Archetype here.?

Anger and Boundaries: Anger is a messenger, a courier on a bike with a little bell. The message says: Alert! SOS! Emergency! Boundary violation has occurred. That is the purpose of your anger. The messenger is not meant to get into a fist fight with the other person. Anger will deliver the message every time loud and clear and anger will stick around until the message is received and signed for. This is a metaphor for taking responsibility. When you sign for your package you are owning that you are responsible for the loss of boundaries and are now ready to take correcting action. At this point anger dissipates and is followed by self-examination and the discovery of the breach. Anger can prevent a lot of pain and stress if its message is heard and heeded.? To read a wonderful book about anger and the messages your emotions are trying to tell you check out Karla McLaren?s book The Language of Emotions.

Communicating without Blaming: Okay, you figured out that you want to have good boundaries. You want out of the co-dependency and into a healthy, mutual relationship. You are ready to take responsibility for your victimization and the message of your anger has been heard loud and clear. Now what? Setting a boundary requires communication. There are two kinds of communication, verbal and non-verbal. Both forms of communication will work well for boundaries as long as you are clear and completely sure of your boundary. To get clear about where you would like to set your new boundaries try this three step process.

Step One: Define your values. Take a few moments to really examine what you value in the situation where you are establishing your boundaries. For example: As a parent, one of my main and most important values is respecting my children?s right to express themselves. This is more important to me than whether or not they are respectful to me. So when faced with a child that is being disrespectful, my first and primary boundary is to hear what they are trying to communicate to me. Understanding how important this is to me, allows me to choose to let them speak unkindly to me instead of feeling powerless to make them stop. But I do have limits for the level of disrespect I will allow and we will get to discussing limits in step two. Defining your values is quite empowering and will help you better understand your past and present behaviors in a new way. Really get in touch with the things that matter to you and you will have the foundation for your boundaries.

Step Two: Define your limits and thresholds. Now that you have a clear picture of what you value, next you set your limits. What can you handle? What is your limit for tolerating something? What are your stress triggers? Knowing and defining your limits for yourself gives you an idea of what the boundary will look like when put into action. In the above example, I let my kids be disrespectful to me in favor of hearing how they really feel but I have a limit to what I will allow. I communicate this clearly to them. No swearing or name calling is one of my limits. If this boundary is disregarded the conversation ends. Instantly. I walk away not to be cajoled or bribed back into the engagement. Before you try to communicate you must really know what your limits are. You may need to think this through or even talk it out with a friend. A really good way to discover your limits is to notice when you feel angry or victimized. Know what you can handle and tolerate from others and what you can?t. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to know your limits.

Step Three: Know your power. To stay with the example of my kids being disrespectful, to know my power I must first realize that I cannot make my child treat me with respect. I can force them to act in certain ways if I use fear, bribery or manipulation but I cannot force true authentic respect. Knowing what I have power over helps me decide what kinds of limits I will set and why. I don?t want to be called names or have my child swear at me. The boundary is for my protection based on my limits. It has nothing to do with the child or trying to make them conform.

Don?t create boundaries based on what you assume will be the? consequences. This always leads to feeling victimized because you do not have power over the future or how others may react. Recognizing what you have power to change and affect and what you don?t will help you immensely in creating successful and respectful boundaries for yourself and others. Once you know what you have power over, you are ready to effectively communicate with others. Taking these three steps will help you avoid blaming others in your conversation or in your actions. Blaming others or trying to have power over others lets you know that the victim is active and needs your attention. When you feel empowered through this three step process you will not be afraid to confront sensitive issues and assert yourself when necessary.

Mind Your Business: Boundaries help you mind your own business. Staying out of others business is respecting your boundaries and theirs. I like the concept of ?the three businesses? by Byron Katie. She asserts that there are three kinds of business: My business, your business and God?s business. How I feel, is my business, what I say and do, is my business. How you feel, act, what you say etc. is your business. All other things outside my control, such as the weather, natural disasters, accidents is God?s/Nature?s business. This has been a really helpful reminder when I am trying to get out of others? business. When I decide to do something, that is my business. Example: How my husband reacts to what I am doing is his business. I am not responsible for his reaction. If he chooses to divorce me because of my actions, that is his business. I have no power outside of my own business. I accept that certain consequences are outside of my control. If I know my power, I can respect his boundaries. He is communicating through divorce, what he can and cannot tolerate from me. He is taking action that respects his limits. That is a somewhat dramatic example but I think it applies to many people. Check out Byron Katie?s website here.

Boundaries and the Necessity of Letting Go: In order to have good boundaries sometimes you have to also learn to let go. We only need to let go of things that are no longer in our power to control anyway. Letting go will give you the freedom and perspective necessary to renegotiate boundaries and recognize your power. Sometimes this requires looking at the hard truth about a situation. Setting a boundary can cause others to leave you, pull away, be angry and frustrated. You may have to let an old friendship go rather than compromising your values to save it. Maybe it is better to let go of your child that is pulling away from you anyway than to keep holding on to them believing you are helping. Know your power, change what you can and let the rest go. It probably isn?t your business anyway.

Boundaries vs Barriers

There is a good article on the web by Pema Chodron called Boundaries vs. Barriers. She makes it clear that barriers are walls we put up against others to try to protect ourselves. We use barriers to hide behind and to keep others in the dark because we are afraid of the consequences of communicating our boundaries. Barriers are not boundaries because they cause confusion, resentment, isolation and pain. You can tell if you are simply throwing up barriers instead of boundaries because you will? avoid confrontation and communication. Boundaries require you to move toward the issues that make you uncomfortable because that is where a boundary needs to be drawn. Barriers cause you to move further away from the conflict.

Setting boundaries is the only way to create healthy and mutually beneficial relationships. Fast walking and jogging halve development of heart disease and stroke risk factors, research indicates

ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2012) ? Daily activities, such as fast walking and jogging, can curb the development of risk factors for heart disease and stroke by as much as 50 per cent, whereas an hour's daily walk makes little difference, indicates research published in the online journal BMJ Open.

The findings indicate that it is the intensity, rather than the duration, of exercise that counts in combating the impact of metabolic syndrome -- a combination of factors, including midriff bulge, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, higher than normal levels of blood glucose and abnormal blood fat levels -- say the authors.

Genes, diet, and lack of exercise are thought to be implicated in the development of the syndrome, which is conducive to inflammation and blood thickening.

The authors base their findings on more than 10,000 Danish adults, between the ages of 21 and 98, who were initially assessed in 1991-94 and then monitored for up to 10 years. All the participants were quizzed on the amount of physical activity they did, which was categorised according to intensity and duration.

At the initial assessment, around one in five (20.7%) women and just over one in four (27.3%) men had metabolic syndrome. Prevalence was closely linked to physical activity level.

Among the women, almost one in three of those who had a sedentary lifestyle had the syndrome whereas only one in 10 of those who were very physically active had it. Among men, the equivalent proportions were just under 37% and just under 14%

Of the remaining 6,088 participants without metabolic syndrome, just under two thirds (3,992) completed the fourth and final survey and assessment, by which point one in seven (15.4%; 585) had developed it.

Again, the prevalence was higher among those leading a sedentary lifestyle, with almost one in five (19.4%) affected compared with around one in nine (11.8%) of those who were very physically active.

It was not only the amount of exercise, but also the intensity which helped curb the likelihood of developing the syndrome.

After taking account of factors likely to influence the results, fast walking speed halved the risk, while jogging cut the risk by 40 per cent. But going for an hour's walk every day made no difference.

"Our results confirm the role of physical activity in reducing [metabolic syndrome] risk and suggest that intensity rather than volume of physical activity is important," conclude the authors.

New African dinosaur is like cross between bird, vampire, and porcupine

University of Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno, who published the findings on Wednesday in the online scientific journal ZooKeys, said in an interview with Reuters he actually made the discovery of the small-bodied herbivore in 1983.

University of Chicago?paleontologist?Paul Sereno, who published the findings on Wednesday in the online scientific journal ZooKeys, said in an interview with Reuters he actually made the discovery of the small-bodied herbivore in 1983.

Sereno, whose research involves mapping the?dinosaur?family tree, said he came upon the specimen as a graduate student while doing research in a?Harvard University?laboratory and intended to write about it immediately.

"I said, 'Whoa!' I realized it was a new species from the moment I set eyes on it,"?Sereno?said. But he says he grew distracted by other things, and had in mind a more ambitious research project.

"There was always a danger that someone would discover it and write about it, and I would read about it," he said, but added it was all for the best: "Hey, I'm smarter than I was then."

The strange-looking species, which?Sereno?has named Pegomastax africanus, or "thick jaw from?Africa," lived between 100 million and 200 million years ago.

"I describe it as a bird, a vampire and a porcupine,"?Sereno?said. It had the weight of a small house cat and stood less than a foot (30 cm) off of the ground.

It had a thick jaw and a blunt beak with a "heightened tooth that sticks down, dagger-like,"Sereno?said. He said it would have been part of one of three groups that form the base of thedinosaur?tree.
